About Patrick “Nightowl” Yore

Patrick “Nightowl” Yore’s music is post-apocalyptic-proto-heavy-pop with a shiny stainless steel metal lining. After starting and starring in too-many-to-count bands such as VENGANCE (Michigan), POTHOLDER (Chicago), THE FUSS and TEN SLOT TOASTER (San Francisco), Patrick realized it was time to produce a solo album.

Born in 1970 in Chicago, Nightowl was born on the Mason/Dixon line of the old and the new, steeped in the icons of old rock, including Elvis, Led Zeppelin, and The Doors. Built upon the bedrock of Chicago Blues’ epic souls like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf at the cultural crossroads of 1970, the world began a new phase of both music and culture where ridiculousness, commercialism and plastic felt imbued into everything. Amongst the haze of these early years, the loud rock ‘n’ roll, cigarette smoke, hair, race car fumes & unbreathable clothing were strong ingredients in the mix.

The 451 era of Clapton, a Yellow Brick Road laid down by Elton John and especially We Will Rock You dispatched on News of the World by Queen also created a tectonic layer, which helped build his musical foundation.

Believe it or not disco and bands like The Village People and the movie Saturday Night Fever were the next layer on the cake. In 1983 he came home from summer camp, turned on cable television and saw the Saturn 5 rocket blasting off. Not only were his ears open, but his eyes were open too. Everything from The Dead Kennedys to DEVO, to gods of metal Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Metallica to Stevie Ray Vaughn rounded out the next powerful layer of this musical tiramisu that kept building taller and wider.

On top of that was hastily thrown a wide and deep assembly of some of the most original, impactful and hilarious music the world is ever known – Grunge. Grown out of what was originally called “College Music” then “Alternative,” and even though it’s not highly regarded by musical “experts,” some of the most lush complex, challenging and intriguing rock ‘n’ roll made an impact on Patrick during tha era. Nirvana’s Bleach, The Pixies and Frank Black, Sonic Youth, the whole SUBPOP catalog (especially The Reverend Horton Heat, Soundgarden, and the Screaming Trees) made for a tasty frosting on this cake laid down in at Michigan State University during his college years.

A two year return to his birthplace of Chicago added even more dimension to Nightowl’s diamond of sound. Lurking through blues clubs like Kingston Mines and Rosa’s felt like home to him, while work was also musically influential, promoting Industrial Alternative music and doing record release parties for the likes of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Urge Overkill.

Then came a move to San Francisco and a more psychedelic, soulful phase – the cherry on top. The swing dancing and Big Band / Big Beat late 90’s era was a blur. Plus Wilco, The Electric Six and The Alabama Shakes can all be found in the grooves on Recipe for Disaster. Lastly, digging even deeper back into Patrick’s musical DNA, you’d find a core of Mozart and Duke Ellington.

“Hopefully there is some originality in this solo album. It is a gift to be able to make music and it’s also a gift to you. Hopefully you’ll find some joy, wisdom, and especially some rhythms that make you feel alive. There are definitely tastes of blood, sweat and tears. Turn the lights down low and the volume up high. YOU ROCK,” Patrick “Nightowl” Yore
